Beaulieu

With such an abundance of history and spectacular country and riverside views, this blissful idyll in the New Forest is a popular location for all who are searching for a piece of the country life.

Beaulieu is one of the most exquisite villages in Hampshire, where, over the mill pond, the famous Palace House (home to the Montagu family for over 400 years) can be seen, and guided tours will take you round what was once the gatehouse of the medieval Beaulieu Abbey. The Abbey itself, a conserved ruin, which was destroyed in 1538 by King Henry VIII but carefully preserved by the Montagu family, can also be explored and the vastness wondered at.

The village is also home to the Beaulieu National Motor Museum where the history of the earliest motorcars and motorcycles comes alive with its stunning collection of 285 vehicles on display. The TV show Top Gear also showcases some its finest and unique vehicles here that were used in their TV challenges and which are not to be missed.

If you take a stroll along the pathway that weaves through the trees beside the Mill Pond, you can appreciate the true beauty of the river and the surrounding natural habit. Then if you explore some two miles south of the village further down the path, Buckler’s Hard, an old shipbuilding village can be found. This was once the birthplace of Admiral Nelson’s fleet and was responsible for building many of the famous ships which fought in the Battle of Trafalgar. Today, it is home to a charming row of Georgian cottages which run down to the river, a country pub and hotel and a maritime museum.

Beaulieu High Street itself boasts various boutiques, cafes and independent shops with the ever popular Montagu Arms Hotel, a 17th century country house, nestling around the corner. With all this splendour and history on your door step, it is no wonder that once you live in the area, there is no need to move away.

As one of the New Forest’s smallest villages, Beaulieu is full of red brick houses dating back to the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Beaulieu boasts rich heritage and historical properties with very little housing development in the last century, ensuring the village retains its charm. Throughout Beaulieu you will find a selection of waterfront properties, period homes, country estates, Grade II listed properties and thatched cottages.
